Random Cat No. 7

This is not a finished drawing but I figured I would put this here and put the finished one in May. The entire time of 9 mins was spent trying to get the various bits right and it is still wrong!

Random Cat No. 6

One of two quick drawings for the day. Two kittens fighting but I was only really interested in trying to get the proportions right rather than the shading and fur, in both cases not great.

Random Cat No. 5

The reference image was of a tabby but I just couldnt be bothered to do the fur and lines. Instead I focussed on the values and tried a bit of cross-hatching. Nothing like the reference image but didnt turn out too bad.

Randeom Cat No. 4

The reference image was of a ginger kitten which is a good stepping stone to drawing my own ginger cats. In the previous drawings of cats, I tried to address the issue of just using the pencil to create the darker values resulting in untextured spaced. I managed to avoid that this time by using a sharp pencil to actually draw lines all over then layer it with darker pencils to create the markings.

Random Cat No. 3

Like the other random cat, a lot of this was out of focus so I just did the head. The hardest part of this cat was the front bit, where the thick fur tufts and I didn’t quite work out how to do it. Looking at it now, I am getting a sense of how I should have approached it.

Random Cat No. 2

My first attempt to try and properly capture the fur – fur is hard and time consuming. No doubt as I continue to do it, I will find a short cut. I do understand why so many illustrators do not spend time on fur!

The paper I am using is a bit rubbish though.

I focussed on the head only because the rest of the cat in the reference photo was out of focus.

Random cat of internet. After the last head, I took a break and quickly sketched out a cat. It is slightly off from the reference image because the body is a bit too long as it moves away from the camera. I also realised that I had double check how to do fur.

100 Faces No. 36

From the complicated list, done over three sittings and two days. Unusually I also took a couple of extra photos along the way which I’ll put in a blog post.

By far the longest single drawing and one which I am the most pleased with to date even though it has its flaws.

100 Faces Nos. 98, 99, 100

Quite a useful exercise to just sketch out quickly the heads but I think maybe I should have done some shading, even if it was cross-hatching.

100 Faces Nos. 96 and 97

On this day, I was low energy and couldn’t be bothered so I basically justed did outlines for the 5 remaining heads.

100 Faces No. 95

I just got bored of this and stopped. I think I definitely need to find new references images as the 100 Faces are becoming a bigger and bigger psychological hurdle.

100 Faces No. 94

This one, I am quite pleased with overall. There is a better balance around the facial furniture and values. I didn’t quite manage to capture the fact that he is an older gentleman being the main negative.

100 Faces No. 90

The third drawing of the day and actually the reference was a bit boring and just sort of gave up.

100 Faces Nos. 88 and 89

The first drawing took 25 mins and the second took 17 mins. I tried to these quickly. The one on left is the first time I’ve tried a whole body drawing. She looks a bit evil!

100 Faces No. 84

The strangest thing with this drawing is that it took longer than the other one I did in the same session and even though there is less detail. I just spent a long time trying to get the face furniture in the right places.

100 Face No. 83

The reference was a lot meaner looking than I managed to capture. This looks like an elderly Elmer Fudd. I also began it with charcoal but then finished with pencil. The values are all over the place.

100 Faces Nos. 29 (1 and 2)

The 100 Faces contains a number of images that I classed as ‘hard’ – usually because they contain a lot of detail and exaggerated the basic proportions. These two are the first that I’ve attempted. The original reference photos were more obvious in their exaggeration, mine are not! As drawings they are ok but I failed to capture their extremes.

100 Faces No. 78

I didnt want to draw this day and it didn’t help that the next drawing was another Oriental one which I really struggle with. So after about 20 or so mins, I gave up!

100 Faces No. 69

The second drawing of the day and overall the biggest let down is the hair – it is nothing like the reference photo and one that I could have done better at. The hand is a total failure.

100 Faces No. 59

An attempt at using charcoal and it was a block of charcoal rather than a pencil type charcoal. I tried to do this quickly and just focus on the big areas. Overall it didn’t come out too bad.

This was also the first of two drawings on the same day.

I did a blog post about this one, but this one, I spent a lot of time on the hair and am very proud as it actually looks like an afro!

I kind of wish I had did some more work on the first head’s neck – it looks a bit weird the head floating there!

First page of new notebook and paper is very different to what I’d been using. You can’t really see it but it was quite hard to get a flat colour because of the texture of the paper. It did state “pencil” on front but I suspect they just added that along with ink and charcoal, pastel.
