Drawings: Mar 2022

March was, other than a 5 day period of being sick, a good month. The number of drawings and time on each drawing is getting better; I am less likely to say ‘f*** it’ with more complicated elements and I can see straightaway where the drawing went wrong. And finally, the notebook is finished which means I can now use a proper sketchbook.

100 Faces No. 22

The big thing for this drawing was how quickly I did it even if the main parts are all a bit off. It is probably the most complete so far.

100 Faces No. 23

This took longer than the day before but is less developed and after I did it, I felt I had taken a step back.

100 Faces No. 24

The longest single drawing in one sitting. And the time was taken with the hair. Or maybe I just misread the time.

100 Faces No. 25

I actually did a tiny amount of tweaking the followingday around the hair the following day, on 6/3, a couple of minutes which was more akin to doodling.

The  hair is unfinished as it was black and I knew to get it black would require a lot of effort.

100 Faces No. 27

Something different here – I used one type of pencil and I gave myself a 15 min max to see how far I would get. I got a reasonably finished piece.

100 Faces 28 and 30

When I first started the 100 faces, I tried to draw the heads thumbnail size. However, I found it quite tough so I went with one head per A5 size paper. This is my second attempt to try again. I also limited the time to to 15-20 mins per head.

Both of these were oriental ladies, not that you would notice!

100 Faces No. 31

This one was pretty quick from start to finish though one eye is a bit off.

100 Face No. 32 and 33

No 32 was in fact a sculpture. I also realised that lips are tough and tend to just to do the same thing no matter the angle of the head.
No. 33 was a much simpler drawing ie no hair and side profile!

100 Faces No. 34 and 35

This is the fist time I did two heads in the same sitting.  That is the target – to do more in each sitting but I think I need to get each down to 10 mins.

No. 35 – the reference photo was a pretty girl but this drawing does nothing in capturing that!

Another Asian face but again I failed to capture that and the face is just generic. I also realised that I needed multiple ways of doing hair.

100 Faces No. 40

This is the first time I tried the block-in first approach.  And I think I used my finger to get some blending for the first time as well. I should have spent more time on the hair.

I used the blender tool for the first time – it was pretty good at getting some sort of base tone and softening the super white of the page.

This one I did the block-in one morning but didn’t get time that same day so had to finish it the next day, again some in the morning and the rest in the evening.  The blending tool was super helpful.

100 Faces No. 46

One of the few times when I actually did a second drawing on same day rather than just finish the one above. This was an oriental lady/girl but when a bit OTT on the eyes to emphasis that ethnic origin and attempt to address previous attempts. Not a great look.

I totally got the block-in wrong here – I tried, erased and started again and still got it wrong. The issue is the  nose proportions – either the nose is too big or the moustach/mout/chin are too small: it is the latter! And i think this is the first head with wrinkles.

100 Faces No. 49

The time on this was the hair part. I didn’t try to copy the reference image but it didn’t turn out too badly. Probably should have spent some time on the eyes and getting those balanced.
