Pathway Drawing: Targets 1-3

PD Target 1 – The Habit

Target: To develop a drawing habit

Measurement: To draw 5-6 days a week

Criteria: At least one drawing or doodle with min time of 1 min

Achievement: Consistently drawing most days in a week and month and have a feeling that you’ve forgotten something if you’ve not done a drawing

Equipment: pencils, paper, rubber, blender.

Starting tips: pick the same hour of the day, keep your equipment close to you; try to have in your mind what you will draw before you start (so it doesn’t become a barrier to drawing)

Pinterest: 100 Faces Challenges courtesy of Ahmed Aldoori (his youtube channel) means there are 100 reference photos readily available with no need to make a decision.

I’ve used human faces to achieve this target because:

  • human faces are fundamental to illustrations
  • helps in learning shapes, proportions and values
  • easy to see progression ie the better they get the more they will look like the reference photo

Warnings: try and avoid missing more than one day as you can lose momentum; don’t over complicate your drawings, keep it simple and to not be a barrier.

Variables: user a timer either to measure how long a drawing takes or to limit your time on the drawing.

PD Targets 2 and 3 – Discipline and Patience

There is a significant overlap between these two ideas in terms of drawing and building a habit. But in my mind they are two different things and should be treated as such. Discipline is sitting at your drawing desk for a set period of time, at the same time every day and staying focussed on drawing. Patience is not rushing your drawing, taking the time to achieve a result, for example drawing hair requires patience.

Both require a slightly different approach in terms of target setting and working out the potential hurdles.

Target 2: Building a Drawing Discipline

Target: to regularise the drawing habit and have a minimum period ideally per sitting or at least per day.

Measurement: To draw 5-6 days a week

Criteria: To have set times when drawing with a minimum period of time – I am going for 60 mins.

Achievement: Having 5-6 hours per week with only 5-6 sittings.

Equipment: pencils, paper, rubber, blender.

Starting tips: be realistic and see when your motivation and energy are at their highest

Target 3: Developing Drawing Patience

Target: to accomplish more complicated drawings that require greater detail.

Measurement: A single drawing taking multiple sessions.

Criteria: to be decided

Achievement: Fewer drawings but greater complexity.

Equipment: pencils, paper, rubber, blender.

Starting tips: plan in advance of the drawing session ie pick your drawing the day before you begin that drawing and then imagine drawing it (for exampel breaking it into shapes, angles, where the light source is etc).
