Introduction

One thing that I noticed when I started target 1 (the daily drawing habit target), I realised having a set of reference images already in place was very helpful. In fact I would go as far as to say it was a determinate in whether I drew or not.

The reference images will be stuff in public domain like on Pinterest or my own images.

NOTE: Pinterest is quite good in suggesting other images so any of the collections below, you can build your own or do what I do which is just take a screen shot and use that as the reference.  I do this so I can number them and I keep them on my own computer ie I don’t share them.

References: Heads

The main reference images – Ahmed Aldoori’s 100 Heads Challenge.

I used heads for Target 1 to build a drawing habit. The source of the heads were from an artist called Ahmed Aldoori who created a 100 heads in 10 days challenge but more usefully he curated 100 varied heads and put them on Pinterest.

On the Pinterest images, when you click on a head, then you can see what others have uploaded as well (I think you will need an account).

If you search “100 Heads Challenge” in Youtube you will get others who did the challenge if you want to see what they did. I found that these others were much further down the line in terms of drawing than myself.

Recently, I saw another youtuber (Kelsey Rodriguez) also do a 100 heads challenge except she curated her own heads.

References: Buildings

I’ve gone with buildings to begin digitial drawing as part of the first target for digital drawings and curated via Pinterest about 50 buildings which should be plenty to pose a challenge.

References: Human Form

At some point, I am going to study and learn human form but have already curated over 100 images for when that happens.

One of the youtube channels that I follow has a website with a whole range of free life references subject to creating an account. I’ve not signed up mainly because I didn’t quite like the fact that you had to consent to receiving emails which looked like marketing, though not sure if this is just a bug. But if you are not OCD as me, the references do look great.

References: Object References

At first, objects were intended to be for the digital drawing but I do want to learn about charcoal and simply images are actually better for that

References: Hands

Hands are tough and need to be practised. Pinterest isn’t actually great and many of the hands on there are driven by tattoos and jewellery. However, I did manage to get some.

References: Skulls

Mainly human skulls in different angles with a few animal skulls thrown in. These were pulled together mainly to practice drawing with charcoal.
