Missing Social Media Icons

Most websites allow you to click through to your social media account but you’ll note that this site is missing those.

There is a reason for this.

I am pro-privacy and I read somewhere that use of those logos is actually pixels that allow a certain amouint of tracking of the data on the website. The article was in particular focussed on Facebook and made the point that by using that pixel it allowed a lot of data to be collected by Facebook. However, at the time I tried to investigate and see what’s what but it was all a bit of an effort and rather opaque to find the terms of using that pixel.

So I decided to err on the side of caution and just not use them. In reality, it is very easy to share these days without the icon whether you are on a tablet, phone or desktop. And it saves me time by not having to find a spot to include them in the templates and pages of the website.
